Letter Opener 3 –This beautiful letter opener was hand hammered from a bar of sterling silver. It measures a full 10” overall, with a 5” silver blade. The hidden partial tang is wrapped with figured Carolina poplar, and set off with Gabon Ebony at the blade and at its sweeping pommel. The handle is held to the blade with mild steel pins. Sterling silver will oxidize and discolor over time, and can be restored to its original shine with any commercial silver polish.

Materials of interest:
Carolina poplar: A pale yellow white domestic soft hardwood, this particular piece exhibits an unusually strong chatoyance (or shimmer). Turn it in good lighting to catch the effect!

Gabon ebony: An African hardwood, Gabon Ebony is the true African Ebony species and is one of the rarest and most valuable species of hardwood. This species offers a truly black appearance that is often imitated but cannot be duplicated. Very dense and hard, and a perfect contrast for many woods.
