El Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead beloved dog memorial floorcloth / rug

Description

El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a wonderful Mexican tradition where people welcome the spirits of their loved ones (pets can be included) back to the physical world for the period of the holiday. Altars are built in rememberence of those who have passed on, embellished with candles, personal items loved by the deceased, an abundance of marigolds, and food to refresh the travelers after their long journey. Many other items can be included, as altars are highly personal, but these are some main components.

I designed this 29" x 46" floorcloth as an altar of sorts for remembering a beloved pet. The front is double primed, and the back is primed once, and the base coats (two on each side) are an intense light blue. The border is teal that leans more toward blue than green, and the purple overlay is meant to look like papel picado, or punched paper, a traditional Mexican art form. Purple is a color associated with El Dia de los Muertos. I've included a bone in that overlay- representing a refreshment to welcome your dog home. Of course, the marigolds and candle are traditional, but I've also included a lizard friend just because I thought it was a nice touch- some extra company.

I love the idea of celebrating the lives of our loved ones who have passed on, including our pets, which are such an integral part of our lives.
