Ancient Ameca-Etzatlan Style, Pre-Columbian Ceramic Figure Of Pregnant Woman. West Mexico, Jalisco PreHispanic Artwork, Dated As Circa 300 BCE To 300 AD. This Female Figure Was Probably One Of A Group Of Similar Ceramic Sculptures Placed In A Jalisco Shaft Tomb. Jalisco Is One Of The Western Mexico States (Colima-Nayarit-Jalisco) From Which Ceramics Of The Period Come, And Its Sculpture Is Noted For A Hieratic Style With Stiff Postures And Staring Eyes. This Female Figure Is A Good Example Of The Style. Her Bodily Proportions—Long Face, Short Arms, Large Torso With Noticeable Shaped Breasts, And Minimalist Legs—Were Not Meant To Indicate Deformities But, Rather, Were Accepted Stylistic Conventions.
This Standing Figure Is Nude, With Legs Set Wide Apart And Hands Resting On Her Hips. Her Body Carries A Softly Modeled Fullness, Especially Across The Stomach And Thighs. The Facial Features Are Small And Restrained, With A High, Columnar Coiffure Rising Above The Head. Remaining Surface Deposits And Faint Pigmentation Indicate Long Burial And The Original Painted Finish.
Figures Of Pregnant Or Full-Bodied Women Are Recurring Themes In Jalisco Art, Often Interpreted As Representations Of Fertility, Ancestors, Or Socially Significant Individuals. This Pair Reflects The Sculptors Attention To Bodily Weight And Posture, Combining Symbolic Meaning With The Distinctive Presence Of Jalisco Ceramic Traditions.
Cultural Tradition: This Piece Falls Under The Western Mexico Shaft Tomb Tradition (1500 BCE To 400 AD), Ameca Style, And The Emerging Teuchitlan Tradition (300 BCE To 500 AD), Particularly In The North-Central Part Of The State Of Jalisco, Mexico.
Dimensions, Size: Height 6.5 Inches. All measurements are approximate. Sold as pictured, Surface Wear And Aging.
Provenance: Collection Of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, Usa, Acquired From A Los Angeles, California, USA Gallery Acquisition Dates Range From The Late 1990s To 2005. Currently Private NYC, USA.
Condition: has been professionally repaired and restored with repainting over break lines; all done expertly and very difficult to detect. Surface wear as shown, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, presents nicely with good remaining pigments and scattered earthen deposits.
