About THEWOVENBRA

Sales 40
On Etsy since 2020

We invented the first Three Dimensionally woven cotton bra.

We started trying to keep the jacquard mill we were working in to stay in business by creating a load carriage system for the military . Well we did it! Wouldn't you rather carry around something that weights 3 pounds instead of 80 pounds. However the military is totally entrenched in the good old boy system and 2 old ladies on their own could not break through the system. We experimented with having a major garment supplier as a partner; we went to the first meeting to find 18 lawyers and 3 garment developers. We realized we would be eaten up so we tabled this project.
We then started working with a local jacquard weaver that understood the significance of three dimensional weaving system we developed and worked with us to develop this bra. The difference between weaving and knitting in the final garment is that in knitting when you pull a garment in one direction, it shrinks in the other direction. This does not happen with a woven garment, because the warp and weft are independent from each other. Also, with jacquard weaving all the darts and fittings can be woven into the garment, which is what we did. The only seams are the back and the straps being attached. If we could have had are ultimate loom to work with, there would not be a seam in the back of the garment.
This is a major technological breakthrough in the jacquard industry; however it is so new that no one but my partner - the inventor- understands it. There are many things that could be woven on a loom practically complete. The problem is there is no software designed for this because the only one who could give them direction is my partner. This takes funding which we do not have.
Sewn seams are the weak point of any garment or anything made out of fabric. We tested our woven seams and they were approximately 25 times stronger than their sewn counterpart. This has major implications for areas in which the seam is critical- ship sails, airbags, parachutes, space suits, etc.
By buying one of our bras, you are contributing to our development fund.
thanks,
the owners
