The first of three works entitled 'Holy Follies', Eve is a stunning original painting by John McDonald, a Scottish artist based in Derbyshire.

The painting is a highly unusual portrait of an unknown heroine, 'Eve', a local woman from Derby, depicted as St Joan of Arc.

From a rich dark background the portrait emerges as though a beautiful light is touching the face, hands and hair; simple and intriguing planes and shapes unite to create a complex and beguiling image.

Eve is depicted with hands clasped in prayer looking up to the light, with an expression which can be interpreted by the viewer in many ways, and which seems to shift as you look at it.

The Holy Follies series celebrates and redefines beauty and age, challenging society and media depictions of women. It also seeks to raise three 'unknown' women to a kind of biblical or cinematic drama, suggesting that there is an inner icon in each of us. We are all saints and stars in potential.

Inspired by the 1970s series Rock Follies, a pseudo-band of three beautiful young women, the artist has embarked on a deeper and more serious work Holy Follies, which sensitively, and movingly explores the beauty, wisdom, survival and strength of his three pseudo-saints.

Measuring 1 m by 75 cm Eve is painted on very high quality artists canvas, in artist's quality acrylic paint. The painting is varnished and comes ready to hang.
