A friend told me that back in the 60's and 70"s, he measured people for custom-made sandals on the streets of Boston, that could be picked up before nightfall. When I visited Santa Fe NM a few years ago, I couldn't find a single sandal-maker!
It's time for making sandals again. They are naturally ecological if they are made from vegetable-tanned leather using non-toxic contact cements, as described in this book. I'm hoping that customers will consider starting local sandal-making businesses, you'll probably be the only one in town.
This instantly-down-loaded pdf book has directions and patterns for making seven styles of women's sandals. Two have continuous straps which are appealing because they can always be tightened to give you secure footing. There's also the ultimate minimalist sandal similar to those worn by Indian distance runners of Mexico, and a sandal with loops so you can easily change straps. A slide, a banded flip-flop and my favorite two-band sandal complete the styles.
