I began hand-painting on silk just over five years ago, something I'd wanted to do for the longest time. I'd always wanted to make some of my paintings into wearable art!
I began painting in watercolors almost exclusively after graduating with my degree in Art from UC Berkeley. I'd painted in oils during my undergraduate studies, but changed to watercolors when I graduated initially for size/storage and to avoid the oil/turp/thinner aromas while living in small apartments. Then I fell completely in love with the transparent nature of the watercolors, and the lovely qualities of the watercolors' intrinsic qualities. I spent 3 years, nights and weekends, painting to learn the characteristics and unique techniques of watercolors. I've been painting in watercolor almost exclusively ever since.
I took the opportunity to pursue my art full time a few years ago after pursuing a career in the non profit arena, and was only painting nights and weekends when I could. Coming back to "living" in my art was wonderfully fulfilling and a new challenge, especially in finding markets in which to sell my work. I now hand-paint my scarves and cotton bedding in addition to my watercolor paintings. A few years ago I started teaching watercolors in the community education department of the local junior college, and run an ongoing watercolor workshop on alternating Saturday mornings.
