Ceramic & Clay Artist living in Perth, Australia
Hi! My name is Laurie. I am a self-taught ceramic artist working predominately with ceramics and clay (but also deviating every now and again to draw pictures of Nicolas Cage). I design and make all my pieces from start to finish in my sunny studio at home in Perth, WA.
Most of my work has an illustrative style to it. I like the combination of sculpting and painting, and a lot of my work is sorted out in the midst of those processes. I don't often start with a 'definite' idea of how I want a piece to turn out, I rarely draft ideas on paper, preferring to keep it spontaneous. There is a lot of working and then standing back to try and see exactly what its turning into going on in my studio most days.
Humour is very important to me in my work, and its an element that gets worked into all my pieces. I often come up with new ideas just trying to amuse myself, whenever a new idea pops into my head I find it hard not to start working on it straight away. Hence the constant evolution going on in my work.
When I listed my first few items on Etsy I never imagined that it would one day be my full time job. I used to read the “Don’t Quit your Day Job’ blog posts and daydream from my office desk. Wishing one day I could be a person who pays their bills with their art. I never realised back then exactly how much work went into being a full-time creative business owner. Its a LOT of work. So much work. But it really is the best job in the world and Im so proud of how far my little business has come in a short period of time.
