This plant was used to make tea when the real thing was being thrown into Boston Harbor. The flowers are red, large, and showy. Great for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies (Swallowtails). The fragrant leaves are narrow and dentate. The oil is used in perfumery. The plant prefers moist, light soil, sun or partial shade; flowering will be prolonged in partial shade. Monardas as a Genus are prone to downy mildew which will not harm the plant but can be unattractive; we cut ours back after flowering to manage this problem. Hardy perennial in zones 4-9, average height of 3ft.

This is getting close to the end of the season for Monardas. Nonetheless, I will get them in the ground tomorrow and might see a bloom this season, but expect them to be well established for next year. The plants I received are in good condition. The plants arrived a day before the shipping estimate and are in very good shape. I particularly like that they were packaged in paper - not plastic. Also, the shop combined my two orders to save me one of the shipping fees. It was a pleasure to deal with them.

I planted the Monarda as soon as I got it but it didn’t live.
