Reproduction of a sculpture representing the Venus of Arles. The original statue dates from the 1st century BC and is on display in the Louvre Museum.
This statue of Venus appeared during the excavation of a well in the French town of Arles in the 17th century. Later, King Louis XIV moved it to Versailles where it was placed in the Gallery of Mirrors. During the French Revolution, it was confiscated along with the rest of the royal family's possessions, forming part of the initial collection of the Louvre Museum when it was founded.
