Roger Leslie – Indigenous Artist & Designer
My name is Roger Leslie, and I am an enrolled member of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. I grew up on the White Mountain Apache Reservation and now live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. My work is inspired by the rich traditions of the Tewa and Hopi peoples, and I apply their unique designs onto household items for decorative purposes. Each design carries cultural significance, reflecting the deep meanings and artistic expressions of Pueblo people.
My creative process starts with ensuring that my mind, heart, and spirit are in a good place. I believe that positive energy and intention are important because my customers will be displaying my work in their homes or gifting it to loved ones. When designing, I draw inspiration from my grandmother, who created natural Pueblo pottery with intricate designs. Seeing her work as a child sparked my desire to adapt those same design elements to contemporary household items.
Crafting is more than just an artistic pursuit for me—it is a way to relieve stress and reflect on positive memories. Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. I was once told, "You can always find good work at your fingertips which will help make a suitable income if you remain committed and work hard." That lesson has stayed with me and continues to guide my dedication to my craft.
My work has been recognized at the New Mexico State Fair, where I won three 1st place and one 2nd place award in the 2023 ceramics division, as well as two 1st place ribbons in 2024. Through my art, I hope to share the beauty and meaning of Pueblo designs while honoring the traditions that have shaped my journey.
About the Indigenous Artisans Collective
Etsy and Nest are proud to support the Indigenous Artisans Collective, the latest cohort within the Etsy Uplift Makers Program, featuring shops from Indigenous makers affiliated with 10 Indigenous groups across the United States and the First Nations of Canada.
Many of the makers practice craft skills that have been inspired by or passed down from family and community mentors. Product collections include meticulously handcrafted home goods, jewelry and other accessories, in honor of the maker’s culture and heritage. Amongst many Indigenous communities, traditional handcraft continues to hold significant cultural value, as well as economic opportunity.
Through the Uplift Makers: Indigenous Artisans Collective, Etsy and Nest are helping to create digital market access and economic opportunities for Indigenous makers while also providing artisans with resources and tools to help run a successful online business. From expert-led digital marketing training, onboarding support, and a custom resource library, the program delivers a comprehensive suite of programming to participants. Additionally, the program addresses key barriers new business owners face such as providing professional photography to capture the creative content needed to showcase their talent and reach new customers in today’s digital era.
