    Owner

I'm a nerdy guy who used to be a professional photographer, was an editor in chief at Condé Nast, loves technology, and - as you can probably imagine - is completely besotted with old maps.

Frequently asked questions

Orders from EU, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Singapore and New Zealand

If you live in the US, Australia, Canada, EU, Ireland, Singapore or New Zealand, your map will be produced at one of my local facilities in your country.

This means your map will get to you quickly, you won't pay any customs duty or tax, and it cuts down on CO2 from flying my maps across the world!

Message me if you have any questions.

Postage & packaging info

All of my maps are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all maps within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks or mugs) can take longer to make.

If you select the free worldwide shipping option, you can usually expect to receive your map around 5 working days after you order. It may be faster or slower, depending on the impact of coronavirus in your country.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order will be sent by courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce) and will usually arrive in 2-3 days.

How my unique maps are made

My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.

I source original, extremely rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on thick matte (not glossy) paper that feels high quality. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/190gsm. It's perfect for framing.

Please contact me if you're looking for a print on canvas or cotton rag.

Framing and hanging info

If you want a frame that's a specific colour or material, or want your map mounted/matted, please get in touch. I work with specialist framers around the world and have hundreds of framing options - so we should be able to find a frame that suits your decor/aesthetic.

My standard frame is a black wood frame. It is simple and quite modern looking. On maps up to 36 inches (91cm) the frame is 2cm (0.75in) wide. I use thicker frames on larger maps - usually between 35 and 60mm (1.4in to 2.4in).

All frames are provided "ready to hang", with either a string or brackets on the back. Very large frames will have heavy duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions... always get in touch!

Framed canvas maps

Some of my maps are available as framed canvas maps. These maps will be printed on canvas and then "float framed" with a black wood frame, with a gap of around 5mm between the canvas and the frame. This is a wonderful and unusual way of presenting an old map.

I print on responsibly sourced cotton canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. The canvas is then stretched over a handmade knotless finger jointed frame, made from certified sustainable pine wood.

The finished piece is 1.5 inches (38mm) deep and comes ready to hang.

Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than on paper. At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible.

Sizing details

Generally, for maps up to and including 24x36 inches, the size in inches is exactly accurate.

So, for example, if you buy an 18x24 inch map, you should buy a frame that 'fits artwork' that is 18x24 inches.

If you need a map with an exact size in centimetres, please contact me. Usually the centimetre size on my shop is accurate, but it can be off by a few millimetres. So, to avoid disappointment, message me first.

For more information about map sizing, please see this detailed guide on my website: https://uniquemaps.co.uk/pages/map-size-guide
