    Learn More About Bundt Pans

A bundt pan is a round cake pan with a hollow tube in the center surrounded by decorative indents and fluting. This gives bundt cake—a sweet, dense, and delicious type of coffee cake or pound cake—its distinctive, sculpted ring shape. The pan’s heavy-walled structure helps the cake rise and bake evenly.

Etsy shops sell a variety of handmade and vintage bundt pans in all sizes—from mini bundts to larger bundts—in a wide range of ornamental patterns and styles. Bundt pans come in a variety of materials, too, such as aluminum, glass, ceramic, stoneware, and hammered copper.

Bundt pans and tube pans seem like similar bakeware—but there are a few notable differences:

    • Tube pans have smooth sides, flat bottoms, and often a removable base that allows you to easily remove the cake. These pans are ideal for baking lighter cakes that need a lot of room to expand such as chiffon and angel food cakes.
    • Bundt pans, while shaped like tube pans, are fluted and often have patterns imprinted in them, ranging from subtle swirls to more intricate shapes and characters like fruits, animals, and flowers. Because bundt cakes are dense and higher in butterfat, they can mold to the pan’s shape and hold its texture.

Removing a bundt cake out of a bundt pan is often the trickiest part, but it doesn’t have to be if you follow these simple steps:

    1. Grease it well. Make sure the bundt pan is well-greased before baking. Using a paper towel or clean dishcloth, coat the inside with a good layer of shortening or melt the shortening and brush it on. Then, dust with flour and tap out any excess before filling with cake batter.
    2. Let it cool before flipping. Once the cake is baked, place the pan on a wire rack and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before flipping it over.
    3. Be patient. Give the pan a peek to see if the cake has loosened. Tap the top and sides of the pan a few times. If it doesn’t slide out, leave the pan inverted and wait for another 10 minutes. The cake should shrink as it cools.
