Tout a commencé après la mort de mes grands-mères en 2006, les mères de ma mère et de mon père sont mortes à moins de 2 mois l’une de l’autre. J’ai commencé à revenir sur les photos que j’avais, à me souvenir de toutes les fois où nous avions passé ensemble et à réaliser à quel point les choses avaient changé depuis que j’étais jeune. J’ai aussi commencé à réaliser tout ce qui s’était passé que je n’avais rien de plus que mon propre souvenir: rien à montrer à mes enfants, pas de photos, rien. Je suis devenu très triste et j’ai décidé de documenter chaque fête, événement, jeu, chacun à partir de ce moment-là afin que lorsque mes enfants vieillissent, ils aient des photos à regarder et à transmettre. Bien que j’aie pris beaucoup de photos, elles n’étaient pas toujours géniales et je ne savais pas quoi faire pour les rendre meilleures jusqu’à ce que je commence à travailler sur ma première maîtrise.
Pour ce diplôme, j’ai dû suivre plusieurs cours dirigés et appliqués en art, chacun d’entre eux étant de mon choix. À ce stade, j’ai mordu la balle, acheté un reflex numérique et pris quelques cours de photographie. J’ai appris à utiliser le réglage manuel de mon appareil photo, à faire la mise au point manuellement, à créer des photographies HDR, à créer de superbes images panoramiques et bien plus encore.
Je suis devenu une machine à prendre des photos, mais je ne prenais pas seulement des photos, j’ai commencé à prendre des photos significatives; des photos qui évoquent un sentiment, une émotion ou un souvenir. Comme je l’ai dit, chaque photo raconte une histoire, et j’ai des livres d’histoires et maintenant il est temps pour moi de les ouvrir au monde et de partager mes histoires avec tout le monde.
It all started after my grandmothers died in 2006, both my mother's and my father's mothers died within 2 months of each other. I began going back over photos I had, remembering all the times we had together and realized how much things had changed since I was young. I also started to realize how much had happened that I had nothing more than my own memory of: nothing to show my kids, no photos, nothing. I got very sad and decided that I would document each holiday, event, game, each everything from that point on so that when my kids grow old, they have photos to look at and pass on. While I took a lot of photos they weren't always great and I wasn't sure what to do to make them turn out better until I started working on my first Master's Degree.
For this degree I had to take several directed and applied classes in art, each of which was of my choosing. At this point I bit the bullet, bought a DSLR, and took a couple of photography classes. I learned how to use the manual setting for my camera, how to focus manually, how to create HDR photography, how to build great panoramic images, and so much more.
I became a picture taking machine, but I wasn't just taking pictures, I began to take meaningful photos; photos that evoked a feeling, emotion, or memory. Like I said, every photo tells a story, and I have books of stories and now it is time for me to open them up to the world and share my stories with everyone.
