Ik ben Seaside Color begonnen om mijn passie voor het maken van kunst en decor met schelpen te delen. Sinds enkele jaren maak ik mijn eigen decor met schelpen:
- een goedkoop ingelijste spiegel door het frame in schelpen te bedekken
- kocht een oude sieradendoos en 'be-shelled' in als een nautische schatkist
- bedekte twee zijden van een eenvoudige bijzettafel uit het midden van de eeuw in rijen schelpen
- gespannen strengen schelpen over een dodelijk schermloos raam als een vogelontsporing
- gehangen schelpen aan lampen, verlichtingsarmaturen en in visnet opgehangen aan een plafond
- gevulde helderglazen vazen met schelpen om een lampenstandaard of plantenstandaard te creëren

Op een dag, toen ik bezig was met mijn meest uitgebreide schelpenproject tot nu toe (schelpen op tegels aanbrengen om op doeken weer te geven of om aan een muur te hangen), dacht ik dat andere mensen deze misschien ook leuk zouden vinden om ze weer te geven. Toen begon ik Seaside Color te plannen!

Er zijn veel stappen betrokken bij het maken van shell-tegels. Voor de beschilderde schelpen en tegels schilder ik ze eerst in bulk. Voor degenen met hangers bevestigd, gebruik ik vervolgens JB Weld (auto-grade epoxy) om zaagtandhangers aan de achterkant van de tegels te bevestigen, zodat ze aan een muur kunnen worden gehangen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de epoxyverbinding niet loskomt en loskomt van de hanger waardoor een tegel van de muur valt en breekt, test mijn man de hechting op elk door zo hard mogelijk met een spijker aan de hanger te trekken. Hoewel normaal consumentengebruik het product niet zou dwingen om dit soort stress te doorstaan, ontdekten we dat de meerderheid van de zwart gecoate metalen zaagtandhangers deze test niet doorstonden. Daarom zijn de meeste hangers ongecoat metaal.

Het ontwerpen van elke tegel is zowel het leuke als het moeilijkste deel omdat het een zorgvuldige afweging vereist, omdat geen twee schelpen hetzelfde zijn! Hoewel ik graag honderd van dezelfde exacte schaal zou willen hebben, heb ik in werkelijkheid misschien een handvol van dat type en moet ik creatief worden met de rest. Ik probeer een uitgebalanceerd, samenhangend ontwerp van schelpen op elke tegel te creëren. Dit is de reden waarom er zo'n verscheidenheid aan ontwerpen is; een handvol schelpen hebben echter hetzelfde ontwerp (kleinere schelpen creëren een rand rond de randen van de tegel). Nadat mijn ontwerpbeslissingen zijn voltooid, doorloop ik vervolgens de laatste stap in het maakproces: ik lijm alle schelpen en andere decoratieve items (d.w.z. plastic kristallen kralen of kleine strass steentjes) met knutsellijm.

Seaside Color is een lang werk in uitvoering geweest met een dierbare peuter thuis en beperkte tijd om aan projecten te werken, maar knutselen met mijn favoriete materiaal - schelpen - brengt me zoveel vreugde dat ik probeer het te doen wanneer ik maar kan!

I started Seaside Color to share my passion of creating art and décor with seashells. For several years, I have been crafting my own décor with shells:
- made-over a cheaply-framed mirror by covering the frame in shells
- bought an old jewelry box and 'be-shelled' in as a nautical treasure chest
- covered two sides of a simple midcentury end table in rows of shells
- strung up strands of shells across a fatal screenless window as a bird decoy
- hung shells from lamps, light fixtures, and in fishnet hung from a ceiling
- filled clear glass vases with shells to create a lamp stand or plant stand

One day, as I was working on my most comprehensive shell project yet (affixing shells to tiles to display on canvases or to hang on a wall), I considered that other people might enjoy displaying these, too. That is when I began to plan Seaside Color!

There are many steps involved in creating shell tiles. For the painted shells and tiles, I first paint them in bulk. For those with hangers attached, I then use JB Weld (auto-grade epoxy) to affix sawtooth hangers to the backs of the tiles so they can be hung on a wall. To ensure that the epoxy bond will not loosen and separate from the hanger causing a tile to drop off the wall and break, my husband tests the bond on each by pulling at the hanger as hard as possible with a nail. While normal consumer use would not force the product to endure this type of stress, we discovered that the majority of black-coated metal sawtooth hangers did not pass this test. That is why most hangers are uncoated metal.

Designing each tile is both the fun part and most difficult part because it involves careful consideration since no two shells are alike! While I would love to have a hundred of the same exact shell, I may in reality have a handful of that type and have to get creative with the rest. I try to create a balanced, cohesive design of shells on each tile. This is why there is such variety of designs; however, a handful of shells have the same design (smaller shells creating a border around the edges of the tile). After my design decisions are complete, I then go through the last step in the making process: I glue on all of the shells and other decorative items (i.e. plastic crystal beads or tiny rhinestones) with crafting glue.

Seaside Color has been a long work in progress with a treasured toddler at home and limited time to work on projects, but crafting with my favourite material - shells - brings me such joy that I endeavor to do it whenever I can!
