J’ai grandi en jouant sur le plancher du Goodwill et du St. Vincent de Paul’s à South Bend, dans l’Indiana, alors que ma mère rôdait dans les allées à la recherche de choses merveilleuses bien avant que le rétro ne soit chic. Elle avait une capacité étrange à repérer le trésor qui était caché au reste d’entre nous, traînant à la maison des meubles minables pour les refaire ou emportant de vieilles boîtes à lunch quand nous pensions tous qu’elle était folle. Elle m’a appris à aimer les objets qui viennent avec une histoire, les choses merveilleuses qui cachent une histoire secrète qui doit être découverte ou inventée.
Finalement, elle a transformé son passe-temps en une petite entreprise et, pendant trente ans, elle a géré deux emplacements « Cats on the Cupboard » dans des centres commerciaux anciens du sud-ouest du Michigan. Depuis son décès, j’ai fait de mon mieux pour me mettre à sa place. I grew up playing on the floor of the Goodwill and the St. Vincent de Paul's in South Bend, Indiana, as my mom prowled the aisles searching for wonderful things long before retro was chic. She had an uncanny ability to spot the treasure that was hidden to the rest of us, dragging home shabby furniture to refinish or squirreling away old lunch boxes when we all thought she was crazy. She taught me to love objects that come with a history, marvelous things that conceal a secret story that must be discovered or invented.
Eventually she turned her hobby into a small business, and for thirty years she managed two "Cats on the Cupboard" locations in antique malls in southwest Michigan. Since she passed away, I have tried my best to step into her shoes. I'm so pleased to be able to find Forever Homes for all her beloved objects, and I hope that you will find something at modernpoetry that will delight you as much as it did Mom when she first rescued it from a rummage sale or thrift store.
