This original depiction of St. Joseph as “Custos Virginum” (Latin for “Guardian of Virgins”) was drawn in the Year of St. Joseph. The artist wished to depict the most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary as young and virile, in the hopes giving view to his strength of character: his self-mastery of the flesh and defeat over the serpent, his unselfish love for Our Lady and the Christ child, and the tremendous power of his intercession for us.
