The tektites are fragments of rocks melted and expelled outside the crater during the impact of a meteorite, which cooled rapidly during their air journey and fell more or less far from the crater. Moldavite is part of the tektite family. It is the product of a collision of meteorites with the earth nearly 15 million years ago.

It was first discovered in 1787 near the Moldau River (Czech Republic), hence its name.
There are other tektites in the world (notably in Tanzania) but moldavite from the Czech Republic remains the most coveted.

The presence of micro-bubbles is frequent and only slightly alters its beauty. Rough stocks are starting to run out as demand increases every year for this faceted gem, which is increasingly prized by collectors and jewellers.

Moldavite is an olive-green to dark green-hued vitreous material, which can form during a meteorite impact. Moldavite is sometimes sold as an ornamental stone, cut and polished, under the name of chrysolite or pseudo-chrysolite. The name of this gem does not refer to the region of Moldavia but to the Czech locality of Týn nad Vltavou, located in the southern part of Bohemia and formerly known by its German name Moldautein, where moldavite is particularly abundant.
