Alpaca fiber is one of the world’s finest animal fibers and considered softer and more durable than cashmere. Alpaca’s develop a single coat which lacks “guard hairs”, normally found on wool and other animal fibers. Alpaca’s single coat is extremely soft which can be worn next to the skin without irritation. Alpaca fiber is considered hypoallergenic and water-repellent.

Alpaca fiber is considered to be hypoallergenic, due to the lack of lanolin (natural body oils) produced by most animals. Wool has guard hairs (wool itch factor) which are coarser than the soft undercoat which they are designed to protect. The Alpaca fibers are semi-hollow; giving Alpaca fiber added insulating value over wool.

Alpaca fiber is coveted by hand spinners and fiber artisans as well as European high-fashion designers. Alpaca fiber is said to be stronger than mohair, finer than cashmere, softer than cotton, silkier than silk, warmer than goose down and breathes better than thermal knits.
