3D DIY Kits
These kits are essentially the product straight off the 3D printer with no post-processing. The DIY (Do It Yourself) aspect implies that the buyer is responsible for any desired finishing work. This includes:
Removing support material: FDM prints often require support structures that need to be manually removed after printing.
Sanding: To reduce the visibility of layer lines and improve surface smoothness.
Assembly: Some models come in parts that need to be assembled into the final product.
Painting or Sealing: If the user desires a specific color or finish.
DIY Kits are great for hobbyists who enjoy the process of finishing the work themselves, allowing for customization and a hands-on experience.
Sanded Versions
Sanded versions of FDM printed products have undergone initial post-processing to reduce or eliminate the visibility of seam lines and layer lines. This is achieved through various sanding techniques, which may involve different grits of sandpaper and possibly filler materials to smooth out imperfections. This process can be time-consuming and requires a bit of skill to achieve a uniform surface without losing detail. Sanded products are ready for painting or can be left as-is for a matte, textured finish.
Painted Versions
Painted versions are fully finished products that have been both sanded and painted. This process includes:
Priming: To ensure an even base for painting and to help paint adhere better to the surface.
Painting: This can range from a simple single coat to detailed, multi-layered paint jobs that highlight the model’s features.
Sealing: A final coat of sealant protects the paint job and can give either a matte, satin, or glossy finish depending on preference.
Painted versions are the most consumer-ready, offering a polished look that highlights the model’s details without the visible signs of being 3D printed.
Note on FDM Prints
It’s important for customers to understand that FDM prints, by their nature, may require some degree of post-processing for aesthetic purposes, especially for applications where surface finish is critical. DIY Kits offer a lower-cost option for those willing to put in the work, while Sanded and Painted versions provide varying levels of readiness for display or functional use, reflecting the labor and skill involved in their preparation.
