A lidded, twin-handled sugar bowl and its matching milk jug, both worked in the old Imari palette — cobalt blue, iron red and gold over white, laid out in panels of little chrysanthemum rosettes, scrolling vines and banded borders. Gold is everywhere you look: washed thickly over both handles and the domed finial, tooled into the borders, threading around every flower.

Look closely at the red blooms and you can almost feel the painter's speed — each small chrysanthemum is a burst of quick single strokes, the shorthand of a hand that had run this pattern a thousand times. The gilding is where the real luxury sits: thickly laid and tooled along the high borders, gilt-washed over the handles and finial, a clear cut above the printed gold on cheaper Imari. A century of use has softened that gold on the very highest points — the tops of the handles and the crown of the finial show gentle wear, the places fingers and tea towels always find first.

Underneath, both pieces carry the same six-pointed star above Paragon · Fine Bone China · Made in England. That star is something of an heirloom in itself: Paragon began as the Star China Company in Longton and held onto the star when it took the Paragon name in 1919. With a plain star and no royal warrant stamped beneath, the set sits in the 1920s, a decade before Paragon began printing its royal appointments. The pattern will call Royal Crown Derby to mind, and it's meant to — English firms all painted these "Japan" patterns after the Japanese Imari originals — but the little star is what quietly tells the makers apart.

Condition
Excellent for a hundred-year-old set — the hand-painting crisp, the colour rich, the lid present and sound, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The gilt has softened on the handle tops and the finial, the high points that always wear first; everywhere else the gold stays bright.
