Vintage Shelley Dainty White Fluted Bone China Plate – Scalloped Gold Rim, Ribbed Radiating Panels, Salad Dessert Tea Dish, England 1950s

A single plate in Shelley's Dainty shape: a six-lobed scalloped edge, a ring of fine fluted panels radiating in toward a smooth plain well, and one thin line of gold following the wavy rim. No handles, nothing painted — the moulded edge does all the talking. At eight inches it's a dessert or salad size, the plate you'd set a slice of cake or a scone on at tea.

The plainness is deliberate. Dainty White is a catalogued Shelley pattern in its own right — white bone china carrying a single gilt line, made for people who'd sooner let the fluted rim carry a piece than reach for a printed flower. Hold it to the light and the body glows faintly through; Shelley built its name on bone china this thin.

Underneath sits the green Shelley script mark with Fine Bone China · England and Rd 272101. That number is worth a word — it registers the Dainty shape, filed back in 1896, and travels with every colourway, so you'll find the identical figure stamped under Dainty Blue, Pink and Green as well. Read it as the form; the pattern you tell by eye. The green mark places this one in the post-war years, before Shelley was absorbed and the Dainty line wound down in the 1960s.

Excellent. The white glaze is clean, the moulded flutes crisp, and the gilt edge bright with only the faintest handling wear along the rim. No chips, cracks, or repairs to note.
