A small milk jug — barely over two inches high — its body moulded in a spiral that twists up from the foot to a wavy leaf-edge rim. Across the front is the full royal coat of arms — the quartered shield, crossed Union Jacks, a crown above — with GOD SAVE THE QUEEN on a scroll over the top and, below, RECORD REIGN and 1837 · VICTORIA · 1897.
That wording is the interesting part. Most 1897 souvenirs say Diamond Jubilee — sixty years on the throne, counted from her accession in June 1837. Record Reign marks something else, from a few months earlier: on 23 September 1896 Victoria passed her grandfather George III to become the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She noted it in her journal and asked that the celebrating wait until the Jubilee the following summer. This jug commemorates that milestone rather than the round number.
The arms are transfer-printed and then filled in by hand — the brush shows in the red quarters, heavier at one edge, and the yellow of the Scottish lion sits a little outside its outline. The gold was laid on by hand too, following every wave of the rim and running down both ridges of the handle. A century of pouring has worn it through to the white in many places, and there is fine crazing where the handle meets the body; the china itself is sound.
Nothing is stamped underneath. Small commemorative wares like this were turned out by the crate for the Jubilee crowds and usually left unmarked, so there is no maker to name — only the year, the subject and the hand that coloured it.
Type: Small cream / milk jug (commemorative souvenir)
Maker: Unmarked — English souvenir ware, maker unrecorded
Commemorates: Queen Victoria's Record Reign, 1837–1897
Decoration: Royal coat of arms, crossed Union Jacks & crown; God Save The Queen and Record Reign scrolls
Era: 1897 — over 125 years old
Material: White earthenware with transfer print, hand colouring and hand-applied gilt
Size: ~2.25" / 5.7 cm tall
Markings: None — unmarked base, as these souvenir wares usually were
Condition:
Sound antique condition — no chips, cracks, or repairs, and the printed arms are clear and bright. The gilding has worn through to the white in many places on the rim and handle, and there are a few tiny old spots to the base. The faint seam where the handle joins the body is an original making mark, not damage.
