Stop thinking of the right thing to say an hour later. Plan it, practice it, say it.

You think of the right thing to say an hour later. You hint instead of asking, agree when you don't, and then feel resentful — or it builds up until it comes out too strong. This workbook teaches the skills of assertive communication step by step, with scripts you can plan and practice before the conversations that matter.

✦ WHO THIS IS FOR

Adults who go quiet in meetings, can't ask for what they want, or swing between holding it in and snapping — who want practical communication skills to speak up calmly at work, at home and with friends.

✦ THE SPEAK METHOD — HOW IT WORKS

A five-step formula for saying what you mean

Step S — State the facts: Describe the situation plainly, without blame or exaggeration.
Step P — Put feelings in 'I' words: 'I feel frustrated when...' instead of 'You always...'
Step E — Explain what you want: Make a clear, specific request instead of hoping they'll guess.
Step A — Ask and listen: Invite their view and listen properly. Assertive isn't the same as winning.
Step K — Keep calm and repeat: If they push back, restate your point calmly instead of backing down or escalating.

✦ FOR THE HARD MOMENTS

Toolkit pages to keep handy:
+ Passive, aggressive and assertive — Knowing the three styles before you practice
+ When someone pushes back — They argue, dismiss you or try to change the subject
+ When speaking up isn't safe — Someone reacts to your needs with threats, intimidation or harm

✦ WHY THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT

Teaches the communication skill itself, not only saying no: a Speaking Up Log to find your patterns, a Script Builder for hard conversations, pages for asking for what you want and responding to criticism, reframes, and toolkits for pushback and for when speaking up isn't safe.
