As one of several games, Elementals lets students form words using one- and two-letter chemical symbols. For example, “heat” is spelled with two tiles: [He] and [At]. Students quickly and beneficially learn the symbols when attempting to make words.

ELEMENTALS PUZZLE & WORD GAME
After assembling your Elementals puzzle, play a word game. Each player gathers about 20 tokens to mark words. Use anything at home like sets of similar coins, cheerios, plastic game chips or coloured scraps of paper.
Form words using one- and two-letter chemical symbols. For example, “heat” is spelled with two symbols: [He] and [At].
Notice that two-letter elements have their second letter in grey. This allows you to ignore the second letter on elements like Zn, Hg because both letters won’t form a valid word. For example, you can use [Zn] [Er] [O] to spell “zero”.

SETUP: Grab a piece of paper and pencil for scoring. Designate a scorekeeper.

HOW TO PLAY
On your turn, find two or three unclaimed elements whose symbols will form a word. Taking no more than 30 seconds, call out your word. Place your unique tokens on the symbols. Add up the element’s atomic numbers for your score. The scorekeeper will maintain everyone’s scores. Alternate taking turns. Play until someone uses up all their markers. The player with the most points is the winner.

TIP: Try for higher scores with strategic placements. For example, “CORN” scores 113 points with [Co][Rn] and only 100 points with [C][O][Rn].
