J'ai commencé à fabriquer des cottes de mailles durant l'été 2001. Je rêvais d'une armure et, faute de temps, j'avais peu d'argent à y consacrer. J'ai donc acheté du fil de fer et cherché des tutoriels en ligne. C'était un passe-temps que je pratiquais de façon intermittente jusqu'en 2019, année où un léger AVC m'a rendu partiellement sourd et incapable de travailler régulièrement. J'ai alors concentré mon énergie sur le développement de mes propres outils et techniques, et j'ai atteint un niveau de maîtrise tel que je me sentais suffisamment en confiance pour présenter mes créations en 2021.
Je participe actuellement à des foires médiévales et à des jeux de rôle grandeur nature dans l'Indiana, le Michigan et l'Ohio, et occasionnellement à des événements dans la région de Mobile, en Alabama. Quand je ne suis pas en déplacement, je vis dans une vieille ferme du nord-est de l'Indiana avec un chien choyé et plusieurs chats de ferme.
Toutes mes chaînes sont entièrement fabriquées à la main. Je commence avec du fil de fer brut que je transforme en anneaux grâce à un équipement que j'ai conçu et fabriqué moi-même. Les produits finis sont ensuite traités au polyuréthane et à la cire pour une finition durable et résistante à l'eau. Je cherche constamment à améliorer mes produits et à créer de nouveaux modèles.
J'adore les défis ! Un bon tiers de mes créations sont nées d'une demande : « Pourriez-vous fabriquer… ? » Ma boutique Etsy ne présente qu'une petite sélection de mes articles (promis, j'en ajouterai d'autres bientôt). I began making chainmail in the summer of 2001. I wanted armor, and had more time than money to spend on it, so I bought some wire and looked up some instructions online. It was a hobby I did on and off until 2019, when a small stroke left me partially deaf and unable to work consistent hours. I focused what energy I had toward developing my own tools and techniques, and got everything to the point where I felt confident letting my stuff out into the wild in 2021.
I currently work the ren faire and LARP circuits in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, with the occasional show in the Mobile, Alabama area. When I'm not on the road, I live in an old farmhouse in northeastern Indiana with a spoiled dog and an assortment of barn cats.
All of my chains are made completely from scratch. I start with plain wire, which I turn into rings with equipment I designed and built myself. Final products are tumbled with polyurethane and wax for a durable, water-resistant finish. I'm always experimenting with ways to refine my products, and with new designs.
I love a challenge - a solid third of the things I sell began when somebody asked "Do you think you could make . . . ?" And what you see on my Etsy shop is only a small selection of what I sell (I swear I'll get more up eventually).
