Vibrant Colours - Directly From Nature!
Fairy Tale Wool was born out of a fascination for nature's beauty and a need for producing naturally dyed wool fleece/ roving sustainably.
It all started locally on the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada, and was meant to provide our small Waldorf (Steiner) School and its community with affordable naturally dyed wool fleece. But due to an active greater crafting community, Fairy Tale Wool soon grew into its current size.
Except for merino wool, silk and some alpaca and mohair, all our fibers are sourced from BC, Canada, mostly locally as well as from Saltspring Island, BC, an island close by with a long history of fiber excellence. All breeders/ farmers are personally known to me and provide good care of their animals.
I have recently started switching from using Australian or New Zealand merino to North-American merino and/ or Rambouillet (a sister breed of merino), trying to thereby reducing its environmental footprint and being able to know more about its origin.
All dyes are derived from nature: petals (e.g. marigold), roots (e.g. madder), skins (e.g. onion), leaves (e.g. Indigo), mushrooms, lichen, and even little bugs (cochineal and lac). We grow some of them in our own bio-dynamic garden and use them, whenever available.
Due to our special water, all dye batches are consistent, which is not always easy to achieve in natural dyeing.
All-naturally dyed wool felt is in line with Waldorf school requirements, 100% wool and slightly thicker than synthetic felt.
We also offer a variety of natural, undyed batting/ roving for your basic spinning, felting and dyeing needs as well as natural Cotswold and mohair locks. Everything is unbleached and scoured, so it's ready for dyeing.
Apart from the usual production line, we also experiment with anything to do with fiber arts, and sometimes we even sell these creations. Just keep an eye on shop updates!
Some of our products can also be found at local stores and art galleries. If you're in the area, let us know and we can guide you in the right direction.
Like any good business, ours is founded on great relationships, inside the business (family) as well as in the greater community. Networking with close-by sheep breeders, producers of natural dyes as well as with other 'makers' is fundamental to our success.
