I'm IronLaceDesign. I am a sarcastic at-home mother and craft geek. I've been making jewelry for twenty years. I love to design, and you'll often find me at my jeweler's desk trying out new designs and materials. I love chainmail - it's knitting in metal, and it's so much fun.
Hi, I’m Kyra Matsui! I’m a sarcastic stay-at-home-mother, a book nerd, and a chainmail enthusiast. I’m from Toronto, Canada, and I’ve been crafting for over twenty years. I love spending time at my jeweller’s desk, bringing new ideas to life. My favorite part of my job is talking to my clients. I love discussing customization possibilities with my client and making a beautiful item that’s just right for the person who will wear it.
My father was a Japanese-Canadian watchmaker and jewelry repairman. Some of my earliest memories are of his tiny pliers and jeweler’s glasses and all the tiny drawers in his home workshop. He had drawers full of costume jewelry, and I would go through them, feeling their shapes between my fingers and digging out the rhinestones. Eventually I discovered that he had wire—and superglue! After I got my fingers unstuck from each other, I started gluing the rhinestones and beads to the wire to try to make my own jewelry.
As a teenager, I discovered costume design and fell in love with it. I studied historical clothing and dressmaking, which influences my own design. I’m fascinated by the way jewelry drapes across the body. That’s why I love Japanese chainmail: it flows fluidly, like fabric, and when I craft it, I feel like I’m knitting in metal.
I’m a literary nerd, and when I’m not working on my latest creation at my desk, my other favorite part of my home is my bookshelf. I love to read, and love creating pieces inspired by book characters even more, using jewelry to bring imagination to life. I also love spending time at the Toronto Reference Library, studying mid-18th-century French jewelry; or at the Royal Ontario Museum, admiring the exhibits on fashion.
I live in the same watchmaker’s house in Toronto, now with a family of my own. I dodge my children’s Nerf wars and blowgun fights while hand-making custom jewelry for my clients. I’m familiar with the demands of parenting, and my designs are lightweight and very sturdy.
Parents who’ve bought my necklaces often report to me that my creations are the only ones they’ve found to survive the constant tugging of little hands. Many families buy my rosaries as confirmation gifts, because they’re rugged enough for children to really use.
I so enjoy making strong and sparkly things by hand. I work with a few friends who take on business and marketing and allow me to spend more time with my children and in my workshop. I want you to love your piece! Should it ever break, please reach out to me. I’ll see if it’s possible to repair it for you. My dream is to make lovely art durable enough for daily wear.
