Non sai mai dove ti porterà la vita... Nel 2009 ho visto per la prima volta in azione una macchina da ricamo. Stavo guardando un'opera d'arte prendere vita, con il filo.
Crescendo ho avuto due fratelli maggiori, ed ero sempre invidioso del mio fratello di mezzo. Prima ancora di poter parlare disegnava, e aveva molto talento. Cercavo di imitarlo, ma le mie mani non funzionavano come le sue. Ho sempre amato l'arte, ma sapevo che non avrei mai potuto essere un artista come lui. Così dopo essermi diplomato al liceo ho deciso di intraprendere una carriera nella programmazione informatica e nello sviluppo web. Pensavo che progettare siti web mi avrebbe permesso di esprimere il mio lato artistico senza dover davvero usare le mani. Ho imparato rapidamente però che non mi piaceva creare siti web. Non ero in grado di creare ciò che volevo creare, e mi sembrava un lavoro noioso. Ricordo che mio padre mi diceva al liceo: "Non importa quanti soldi guadagni, se odi il tuo lavoro, non sarai felice nella vita. Trova qualcosa che ti piace fare ogni giorno."
Ho un talento per essere in grado di capire le cose, risolvere i problemi. Ogni progetto rappresenta una nuova sfida per me, ed è la sfida che mi mantiene motivato. Ci sono così tanti aspetti in un buon design, dagli angoli dei punti, alla densità e alle cuciture del sottofondo. È un'arte molto complicata e tecnica... ed è quello che mi piace. Ho imparato a digitalizzare acquistando disegni di ricamo, vedendo i problemi che avevano e risolvendoli. Da lì sono stato in grado di capire come suddividere un'immagine in livelli per creare un design da zero. Avevo un lavoro come macchina da ricamo in un negozio locale e dopo 6 mesi di lavoro lì e gestione del mio negozio Etsy nel mio tempo libero, ho deciso di fare il grande passo. Ho lasciato quel lavoro e ho iniziato a concentrare tutto il mio tempo e le mie energie sulla costruzione di una libreria di progetti. Ho notato i risultati abbastanza rapidamente e ho sentito di aver finalmente trovato un lavoro piacevole. Sono in grado di esprimere il mio lato artistico e allo stesso tempo dare alle persone i disegni di cui hanno bisogno per portare a compimento i loro progetti.

Growing up I had two older brothers, and I was always envious of my middle brother. Before he could even talk he was drawing, and he had a lot of talent. I would try to imitate him, but my hands just didn’t work like his. I have always loved art, but I knew I could never be an artist like him. So after graduating high school I decided to pursue a career in computer programming and web development. I thought designing websites would allow me to express my artistic side without really having to use my hands. I quickly learned though that I did not enjoy creating websites. I wasn’t able to create what I wanted to create, and it just felt like a boring job. I remember my father telling me in high school, “It doesn’t matter how much money you make, if you hate your job, you won’t be happy in life. Find something you enjoy doing everyday.”
I have a knack for being able to figure things out, problem solving. Every design presents a new challenge for me, and it’s the challenge that keeps me motivated. There are so many aspects to a good design, from stitch angles, to density and underlay stitching. It’s a very complicated and technical art… and that’s what I enjoy. I learned how to digitize by purchasing embroidery designs, seeing the issues they had, and fixing them. From there I was able to figure out how to break an image down into layers to create a design from scratch. I had a job running an embroidery machine at a local shop and after 6 months of working there and running my Etsy shop in my free time, I decided to take the plunge. I quit that job and started focusing all of my time and energy on building a library of designs. I noticed results pretty quickly, and felt I had finally found enjoyable work. I’m able to express my artistic side while also giving people the designs they need to bring their projects to fruition.
