Creating Wearable Art, Functional Art, and Art Just for Fun!
Welcome to Coastal Cottage Studio, aka Janice Holden Designs! I've been on my artistic journey for as long as I can remember, exploring new techniques and new media along the way. I love to work with paint, textiles, fiber, and unusual pieces and parts. Whether I'm creating a quilt, a needlework design, a piece of wearable art, or a piece of hand painted furniture, I'm having fun and always learning something. I love to share my work with others, and often turn a design into a pattern or kit.
I have such a wonderful life – I live in a coastal community with a laid-back vibe, and get to spend every day coming up with playful, imaginative designs.
The Studio
My home and Coastal Cottage Studio are located in Satellite Beach, on Florida's beautiful Space Coast.
I share space with my Mom (MimZ), who has her own business finishing needlework pieces. I am so blessed to have a wonderful space to create in, and time to hang out with MimZ. 5:00 wine time! My sewing and design studio is organized, functional, and really motivates me! My sweetheart, Ray, built a flexible shelving system that covers most of one wall and provides storage for fabric, paints, books, projects-in-progress and notions. It is so much fun to walk into this space and find inspiration in the colors, prints and textures I have at my fingertips.
The Design Process
Creative ideas pop into my head all the time – I often wake up in the morning with something fresh that I can't wait to get to work on! Sometimes inspiration leads to a few sketches and some work in Adobe Illustrator or WinStitch, and sometimes I go right to my fabric wall or paint selection. I try to go with the flow and let my ideas and the project guide me to the right process. It takes quite a bit of work, re-work and fine-tuning to create a finished piece, and it takes a different kind of focus to turn a piece into a canvas, chart or pattern & instructions that someone else can follow.
Thank you for stopping by!
