Philipp talks in the form of an interview about the exciting development of RotRost.
How did you come up with the idea to found RotRost?
I am a trained industrial mechanic and completed my studies in the field of supply engineering after my training. Most of my main job is in the office. It took a little while but then I realized that I missed working with my hands. That's how I came up with the idea of founding RotRost.
What were your first steps?
I started designing products, experimented with the rust process, thought about how I wanted to ship the products. Over months, all these ideas and experiences grew. Until I finally made the decision to start the RotRost project.
How did you cope with the production?
I am fortunate to be able to use a workshop on weekends that is perfectly equipped for metal processing.
I made the first prototypes and realized how much fun it is for me to work manually again. Because I always try to develop new products, it never gets boring or monotonous. The rusting process caused more problems. I experimented with different solutions to speed up the rusting process. A mixture of vinegar and salt, with hydrochloric acid and oxidizing agents.
But in the end, I realized that the natural rust process with rainwater simply creates the most beautiful rust pattern. So I built a sprinkler system that irrigates the products on a flat roof in a rainwater circuit via a timer. The rusting process takes much longer, but the quality convinces in the end and this also sets the products apart from other suppliers.
What does the future look like?
Of course, I hope to continue to make customers happy with my products and to beautify more gardens. Furthermore, I am pleased to be able to expand the product range.

Wie kamst du auf die Idee RotRost zu gründen?
Ich bin gelernter Industriemechaniker und habe nach meiner Ausbildung ein Studium im Bereich der Versorgungstechnik absolviert. Meinen Hauptberuf übe ich größtenteils im Büro aus. Es hat ein wenig gedauert doch dann habe ich gemerkt, dass mir das Arbeiten mit den Händen fehlt. So entstand in mir die Überlegung RotRost zu gründen.
Was waren deine ersten Schritte?
Ich startete damit Produkte zu designen, experimentierte mit dem Rost Prozess, überlegte mir wie ich die Produkte versenden will. Über Monate wuchsen all diese Ideen und Erfahrungen. Bis ich dann schlussendlich den Entschluss gefasst hab das Projekt RotRost zu starten.
Wie kamst du mit der Produktion zu recht?
Ich habe das Glück, an Wochenenden eine Werkstatt nutzen zu können, die für die Metallverarbeitung perfekt ausgestattet ist.
Ich stellte die ersten Prototypen her und merkte wie viel Spaß es mir macht wieder handwerklich zu arbeiten. Dadurch das ich immer versuche neue Produkte zu entwickeln wird es auch nie langweilig oder monoton. Der Rostprozess machte da mehr Probleme. Ich experimentierte mit verschiedenen Lösungen um den Rostprozess zu beschleunigen. Eine Mischung aus Essig und Salz, mit Salzsäure und Oxidationsmitteln.
Doch am Ende stellte ich fest, dass der natürliche Rostprozess mit Regenwasser einfach das schönste Rostbild erzeugt. Also baute ich eine Sprinkleranlage, die die Produkte auf einem Flachdach in einem Regenwasserkreislauf über eine Zeitschaltuhr bewässert. Der Rostprozess dauert damit deutlich länger, aber die Qualität überzeugt am Ende und das hebt die Produkte auch von anderen Anbietern ab.
Wie sieht die Zukunft aus?
Natürlich hoffe ich darauf weiterhin Kunden mit meinen Produkten glücklich zu machen und weitere Gärten zu verschönern. Des Weiteren freue ich mich dadrauf die Produktpalette vergrößern können.
