Frequently asked questions

Why is thread count important

This is how many threads per square inch in fabric. The lower the number the easier to sew because there is more space between the weave for the needle (and other things) to slip through. Regular quilting cotton is around 60, good quality quilting cotton and designer cotton 150 and up. Some speciality fabrics like my 60% cotton 40% lyocell is 310 and I’ve seen top quality Egyptian cotton up to 600. Naturally if there is less space between threads it resists the needle and it is hard on sewing machines, so crafters prefer not to use it.

What is lyocell?

Lyocell is a spun fibre made from timber, similar Rayon. It has moisture wicking qualities, so tends to be used in areas of high humidity to wick away sweat. Because our breath is warm and has a high moisture content, I use it in my luxury mask lining for comfort.

Are your masks machine washable.

Yes. While cotton is washable in high heat, elastic is not. Machine wash in medium to low temperature on delicate cycle preferably in a mesh bag. Hand washing will prolong the life of your mask. Hang to dry. Do not iron the elastic.

Wholesale availability

Yes. Bulk orders start at 20 and Wholesale at 50 items.

Fitting your mask

When you receive your mask, wash it, this relaxes the weave, softens the fabric and makes it easy to fit. There is a slight difference in the top and bottom nose curve, so find the most comfortable way up.

I ship with elastic configured for wearing around the back of the head. The beauty of my adjustable style is that you can cut it in the the center and convert your mask to ear loops if you prefer. The elastic can also be replaced by cord or ribbon. Adjust and knot the elastic, but don’t cut the excess until you’ve worn it for a day or two. When satisfied, cut and feed the knot into the side to conceal. Take care not to pull the elastic out of the side casing. All elastic stretches out, so repeat as necessary and replace when needed.

What type of stretch fabric is good for masks

There are two types of stretch fabric: The most common type is knitted, sometimes with added spandex to make it stretchier, there is also woven stretch fabric with spandex. Knit stretch fabric generally has large holes between the threads which can be pulled wider when stretched and is therefore not appropriate for making masks. Woven stretch fabric is usually quite tightly woven, pulled even tighter by spandex thread. The stretch fabric I use is always a tight woven fabric with spandex.

How to Measure your face

Check Measurements.
If you already have a mask you like, measure it.
If not, measure your face from bridge of nose (dip between top nose and forehead) down to about 1/2 inch under curve of chin. It should be around 4-6 inches. Then measure from just in front of ear where the bump of cartilage is, across the nose to the same spot on other side, usually 10-12 inches. Its OK for a mask to be smaller than this, but not too much. It should be about 1/2 inch smaller than the top to bottom measurement and 1 - 2 inches less than the width measurement.
I measure 5 1/2 inches x 11 inches and wear a size large.

I am raising funds to donate to Cancer and Alzheimer’s research. I am also hoping to raise enough to support public TV.
