For twenty years I helped build systems to find the signal in the noise. Signal Move Co is what happened when I finally turned that skill on myself.
The framework didn't come from a book.
In 2002, a friend offered me a job at his startup. I had never worked online before. The company was in ecommerce, in the early days when our little office was figuring out what online fraud even looked like in real-time. No rules. No playbook. Five people in an office figuring it out as we went.
I did that work for a long time. What it teaches you is this: the most convincing story is usually the one most worth questioning. Any system built on what you hope is happening will fail the moment reality shows up. You stop trusting easy answers. You look for what's actually there.
I became a father at 20. My twenties didn't look like most people's twenties. I loved Kerouac, loved the idea of the open road, loved all of it from a distance while I did what you do when someone is depending on you.
In the summer of 2017, my daughter got married. She and her husband were already in Florida building their own life. Something in me recognized that the thing keeping me in Ohio wasn't there in the same way anymore. Not in a sad way. More like the winds shifting.
That fall, I was the obvious choice to lead a new team at work. And I knew, with complete certainty, that I wasn't going to take it. Not because I was burned out. Because I finally had no good reason left to stay.
When someone asks for your decision by next week and you already know the answer, the only question left is whether you're honest about it.
I gave my notice. Sold off most of what I owned and packed what was left. I'd been dreaming about that kind of move since I first read On The Road. Now I just went.
I didn't leave with clarity. I left with one decision. The clarity came later, while moving. That's the whole thing. That's this.
In March 2021, a few days before I was supposed to hit the road again, I was in a car accident. Compound fractures in both ankles. Two surgeries in two days. Two weeks hospitalized, three months in a wheelchair, then a long time relearning to walk. Pins and screws are still in there.
You don't think your way back into a working body. You don't feel ready and then start. You do the rep. Then another. Then another. I just did the next thing. The evidence built up and that became the self-trust.
That's not a metaphor. That's what happened.
There's a myth that runs through almost everything — self-help, corporate culture, the advice well-meaning people give. It says: get clear first, then move. Make the plan, then execute. Feel ready, then go.
It's backwards.
It was backwards in 2002 in that office. Backwards in 2018 when I gave my notice. Backwards in a hospital bed in 2021 doing one rep at a time with no guarantee of the outcome. The clarity never came first. It came from moving. Every time.
The ones who stay stuck aren't lacking information. They're waiting on a feeling of readiness that doesn't arrive before you act. It arrives after.
The Self-Trust Reset exists for that person. Not to motivate them. Not to give them another framework to think about. To give them one honest next step and something to write it on.
That's the whole thing.
I keep accidentally arriving at the beginning of things.
A lighthouse doesn't clear the fog. It holds one point so you can move without drifting. I'd been trying to be that for other people long before I built this company.
I have five grandchildren. The youngest was born three weeks ago. I'm not building this for some future version of myself who finally has it figured out. I'm building it because the tools I needed at 20, at 35, at 43 didn't exist in a form I could hand someone. They do now. That's the reason this needs to outlast me.
