Bangle Cat Beginnings
Me crié en Maui, donde los brazaletes eran una pieza básica de joyería a todas las edades, desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte. Una vez que te pones uno, rara vez te lo quitas. Iban contigo a todas partes e hicieron que todos los días se sintieran especiales. Bellamente hermosa sin esfuerzo, adornada con perlas y conchas, el delicado repique de brazaletes sonó en todas partes. No hace falta decir que capturaron mi interés.
Al crecer, mi enfoque siempre fue el diseño de una forma u otra. Fui al campamento de arte todos los veranos en el Hui No'eau y tomé una variedad de clases de arte cada año durante toda la escuela. Particularmente desarrollé un amor por la escultura, la pintura y el diseño de joyas. Mi elección de ir a la escuela de enfermería fue un shock para mi familia centrada en el arte.
Cuando me mudé a Portland para la universidad, perdí el contacto con mi lado creativo. Puse la nariz en el suelo, estudié, me gradué e inmediatamente comencé a trabajar. Sin embargo, mis brazaletes siempre estuvieron a mi lado. Constantemente tenía gente preguntando de dónde los obtuve, ¡y todo lo que podía decir era que los obtuve de casa! No sabía cómo hacer tiempo para hacer joyas, pero sabía que hacer brazaletes en Portland estaba en mi futuro.
A principios de 2021 me rompí la muñeca y estuve fuera de servicio durante tres meses. Después de un año caótico como enfermera, el final de la pandemia no estaba a la vista, y estar encerrado con una lesión, me quedó claro que necesitaba una salida. Necesitaba algo que esperar. Necesitaba hacer espacio para mi cerebro creativo.
Bangle Cat nació de esa necesidad. Trabajé en logística y diseño mientras mi muñeca ganaba fuerza, y el proceso de hacer brazaletes en realidad se convirtió en una parte importante de mi terapia física.
En el diseño de mis brazaletes quería incluir elementos clásicos de los brazaletes con los que crecí, como perlas y conchas, pero también quería incorporar un poco de estilo Portland. Decidí hacerlo ofreciendo una variedad de gemas como piedras semipreciosas, semillas, huesos y madera.
A pesar de que he vuelto a trabajar a tiempo completo como enfermera, he protegido mi espacio creativo. Bangle Cat Bangles es un trabajo de amor, es mi ajetreo lateral con todo mi corazón.
I was raised on Maui where bangles were a staple piece of jewelry at every age from birth to death. Once you put one on, you rarely took it off. They went with you everywhere and made everyday feel special. Effortlessly beautiful, adorned with pearls and shells, the delicate chime of bangles rang everywhere. Needless to say they captured my interest.
Growing up my focus was always design in some form or another. I went to art camp every summer at the Hui No'eau and took a variety of art classes every year throughout school. I particularly developed a love for sculpture, painting, and jewelry design. My choice to go to nursing school was a shock to my art-centric family.
When I moved to Portland for college I lost touch with my creative side. I put my nose to the ground, I studied, I graduated, and I immediately started working. However my bangles were always by my side. I constantly had people asking where I got my them from, and all I could say was that I got them from home! I didn't know how to make time for jewelry making but I knew making bangles in Portland was in my future.
In early 2021 I broke my wrist and was out of commission for three months. After a chaotic year as a nurse, the end of the pandemic nowhere in sight, and being cooped up with an injury, it became clear to me that I needed an outlet. I needed something to look forward to. I needed to make space for my creative brain.
Bangle Cat was born from that need. I worked on logistics and design while my wrist gained strength, and the process of making bangles actually became an important part of my physical therapy.
In the design of my bangles I wanted to include classic elements of the bangles I grew up with, like pearls and shells, but I also wanted to incorporate a bit of Portland flair. I decided to do that by offering a variety of Gems like semiprecious stones, seeds, bones, and wood.
Even though I am back to work fulltime as a nurse, I have protected my creative space. Bangle Cat Bangles is a labor of love, it is my side hustle with my whole heart.
