𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕱𝖑𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖉 𝕸𝖆𝖈𝖊:

The ancestors to maces have been found dating as far back as the Upper Paleolithic Period, resembling rudimentary clubs with stones or shards of flint added. over millennia, as more advanced materials began to emerge and become adopted by ancient societies, the mace transformed into a stone, bronze and then iron weapon. Many ancient civilizations fielded the mace, but it seems to have taken off primarily in eastern cultures where the tradition of heavily armored combat seems to have begun much earlier than their western counterparts. Persian Cataphracts were known to deploy them to great effect, but saw little use by the Romans, apart from being fielded by auxiliary units from middle eastern provinces. As the middle ages began, western armor technology evolved to chain maile, which effectively protected from edged weapons. This led to a widespread adoption of bludgeoning weapons, which could still do effective damage against heavily armored opponents. As Maile turned into plate, the mace evolved alongside it - developing studs for penetration sometime after the 6th century. By the 12th Century, Iron flanges were becoming popular, and seem to have developed more or less concurrently across the old world. Due to its simplicity in manufacture and effectiveness against armor, maces were very popular and cheap weapons throughout most of the ‘classic’ middle ages. Maces saw a fast decline in usage as armor became obsolete, but saw a resurgence during the first world war in the brutal trench fighting that took place as a cheap and effective weapon. Interestingly, steel body armor made a resurgence at the same time amongst some trench raiding units on both sides of the war. In modern times, the mace is mostly relegated to symbolic usage on parade grounds or judicial proceedings in some nations.
