Put a Bug On It
Im Sommer nach meinem ersten College-Jahr, als ich in den Wäldern von North Carolina wanderte, fand ich eine perfekt unberührte, aber tote Luna Moth auf dem Weg. Ich behielt es und benutzte es in meinem ersten Druckkurs. Ich war sofort süchtig nach Insekten als Thema.
Ich mochte, dass sie oft ignoriert oder verunglimpft werden, aber wenn sie genau untersucht werden, sind sie einzigartig und schön.
Ich fing an, Insekten zu sammeln und Entomologiebücher aus der Bibliothek zu überprüfen. Freunde und Nachbarn brachten mir routinemäßig seltsame Käfer, die sie rund um das Haus fanden. Ich habe es so genossen, etwas über Insekten zu lernen, dass ich für Abschlüsse in Biologie und Anthropologie an die Universität zurückgekehrt bin. Meine Forschung konzentrierte sich auf die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Insekten und Menschen. Dies führte mich schließlich zu einem Doktortitel in Governance und Nachhaltigkeit. Jetzt recherchiere ich die Umweltpolitik und wie Menschen Entscheidungen über natürliche Ressourcen treffen.
Als Grafiker habe ich viele verschiedene Medien erkundet. Gelegentlich poste ich vielleicht einen Vintage-Artikel, den ich in meinen jüngeren Tagen gemacht habe (eine Radierung oder Lithographie), aber in meinem Heimstudio mache ich hauptsächlich Holz- und Linoleumblöcke.

The summer after my first year of college, hiking in the woods of North Carolina, I found a perfectly pristine but dead Luna Moth on the trail. I kept it and used it in my first printmaking class. I was hooked immediately on insects as a subject matter.
I liked that they are often ignored or disparaged, but when examined closely are unique and beautiful.
I began collecting insects and checking entomology books out of the library. Friends and neighbors would routinely bring me strange bugs they found around the house. I enjoyed learning about insects so much that I went back to University for degrees in Biology and Anthropology. My research focused on the interactions between insects and humans. This eventually led me to a PhD in governance and sustainability. Now I research environmental policy and how people make decisions about natural resources.
As a printmaker I've explored many different media. Occasionally I may post a vintage item made by me in my younger days (an etching or lithograph), but in my home studio I make primarily wood and linoleum blocks.
