Making Utah's fossils and rocks available in convenient and attractive package.
Hello, I am Robin, and welcome to LearninRocks.
I design rock collections for youth and long time collectors looking for unique and rare Utah rocks.
THE BEGINNING...
came with a sister-in-law who teaches 4th grade geology. She would show rocks to her students and then have the students pass them around. Several rocks would be shown and each passed from student to student. It was difficult for students to remember what was shown, as one was going around the class, and then only have a few moments to identify any features before passing it along.
THE SOLUTION...
was simple. I would give her samples of rocks to show and then make kits of the same rocks for the students. They could look at theirs at the same time the teacher was showing hers. I designed six kits with nine rocks in each one. Fossils, minerals, crystals, and igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.
THE SEARCH WAS ON...
to find 54 different rocks needed to fill six cases with nine rocks in each. I traveled near and far, and high and low. Every rock needed to look as close to the teachers as possible, only smaller. To make it more interesting, I polished some, left some as I found them, others I coated to protect from damage and to bring out color. Each kit was unique, unusual, and one of a kind. I wanted students to compare their kits and ...
IT WAS A BIG HIT!!!
But after each class they needed to turn them back to the teacher. When I was asked to come show my collection to the classes, I saw how big their eyes got looking at crystals, and the colorful minerals, and the amazement at the fossils. So I began bringing extra cases and rocks for them to make their own. Topaz, pyrite, turitella, apache tears and others to choose from. They became known as Rockin' Robin's Learnin' Rocks. Later it changed to LearninRocks.
SO WHY THESE? THE CONCLUSION:
I offer different rocks than what you'll find in the usual collections. Fossils from Montana, Blue petrified wood from Wyoming, and trilobites from Utah. Topaz crystals and green garnets from Utah, or opal from Idaho and red garnets from Montana. Maybe you would like a red beryl or piece of ammolite, which are among the rarest gemstones in the world.
