Little Splashes of Color — My Story
Ik ben Kathy Jurek, een kunstenaar en illustrator uit Omaha, Nebraska, met een passie voor aquarelillustraties. Ik combineer levendige lagen aquarel met ruwe potloodtexturen om ontwerpen te creëren die zowel speels als tijdloos zijn.
Kunst is al zo lang ik me kan herinneren een onderdeel van mijn leven. De afgelopen twintig jaar heb ik wekelijks geschilderd met een kleine groep vrienden – en het was tijdens een van die sessies, terwijl we experimenteerden met losse, kleurrijke acrylverf, dat de woorden "Little Splashes of Color" in mijn hoofd opkwamen. Ik bewaarde de naam, in de wetenschap dat die ooit ergens bij zou horen. Deze winkel is dat 'iets'.
Ik begon met het schilderen van portretten, iets wat ik nog steeds graag doe, en heb een paar jaar als kinderillustrator gewerkt. Toen ik mijn Etsy-winkel opende, wilde ik me richten op kinderkunst – en ik begon met een set vrachtwagens. Die verkochten goed, en toen gebeurde er iets geweldigs: klanten begonnen me te vragen om specifieke vrachtwagens te schilderen. Hun verzoeken gaven vorm aan de collectie, voertuig voor voertuig, totdat het uitgroeide tot treinen, tractoren, vliegtuigen en nog veel meer.
Dat is de kern van wat ik doe. Ik schilder dingen die mensen een warm en nostalgisch gevoel geven – kunst die thuishoort in een kinderkamer en met het kind meegroeit, stukken die een verhaal vertellen nog voordat er een woord is gelezen. Elke prent begint in mijn thuisatelier, waar de aquarelverf altijd klaarstaat en er meestal iets nieuws in de maak is.

I'm Kathy Jurek, an artist and illustrator based in Omaha, Nebraska, with a passion for watercolor illustration. I blend vibrant layers of watercolor with gritty pencil textures to craft designs that are both whimsical and timeless.
Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. For the past 20 years, I've painted weekly with a small group of friends — and it was during one of those sessions, playing around with loose, colorful acrylics, that the words "little splashes of color" popped into my head. I tucked the name away, knowing someday it would belong to something. This shop is that something.
I started out painting portraits, which I still love, and spent a couple of years working as a children's illustrator. When I opened my Etsy shop, I wanted to focus on nursery art — and I began with a set of trucks. They started to sell, and then something wonderful happened: customers began asking me to paint specific trucks. Their requests shaped the collection, one vehicle at a time, until it grew into trains, tractors, airplanes, and beyond.
That's the heart of what I do. I paint things that make people feel warm and nostalgic — art that belongs in a child's room and grows with them, pieces that tell a story before a single word is read. Every print starts in my home studio, where the watercolors are always out and something new is usually in progress.
