Ma fille et moi prions ensemble matin et soir, et nous étudions la Bible ensemble. Elle la connaît remarquablement bien. Mais c'est lors de nos promenades du soir qu'elle se confie vraiment, et lors d'une de ces promenades, elle m'a dit quelque chose qui m'a profondément marquée. Intellectuellement, m'a-t-elle dit, elle est tout à fait capable. Il lui manquait simplement la connexion du cœur.

J'avais envie de lui faire la morale. Je suis papa, c'est instinctif. Au lieu de ça, je suis rentré et j'ai commencé à lui écrire une histoire, celle de Millie, d'une nouvelle amie d'une gentillesse inébranlable, Grace, qui refuse de l'abandonner malgré tous ses refus, et d'une petite pièce d'argent avec « OUI » d'un côté et « NON » de l'autre. J'espérais qu'à travers cette histoire, elle entreverrait la profondeur de l'amour qu'on lui porte, et que ce qu'elle savait déjà au fond d'elle finirait par toucher son cœur. Qui est vraiment Grace ? Je laisse à chaque lecteur le soin de le découvrir. Ma fille, elle, le sait.

Une fois le livre terminé, nous avons décidé, elle et moi, que la pièce ne devait pas rester fictive. I wanted to lecture. I'm a dad; it's the factory setting. Instead I went home and started writing her a story, about a girl named Millie, a relentlessly kind new friend named Grace who refuses to give up on her no matter how many times she's pushed away, and a small silver coin with YES on one side and NO on the other. I wrote it hoping that somewhere in that story she would catch a glimpse of how deeply she is loved, and that what she already knew in her head would finally make the trip to her heart. Who Grace really is, I leave for every reader to discover. My daughter knows.
