Making It Work
Hace unos años, mi vida creativa dio un giro inesperado. Mientras estábamos en un viaje por carretera con mi amor y amor de mi vida, Bill, entramos en una tienda de tabaco en el casco antiguo de San Diego. En un estante inferior había varias cajas de cigarros vacías para la venta. Inmediatamente me sentí atraído por la belleza de las cajas y también por su potencial. Puedo hacer algo con estos, pensé, y allí mismo, aunque aún no lo sabía, nació Trail's End Collection. Compré las cajas y las embellecí con botones y monedas viejas de mi colección. Deberías venderlos, me dijeron. Alentado por mis hijos y por Bill, comencé a vender mis creaciones en línea en agosto de 2011. Me expandí a ferias de artesanía unos meses más tarde, y luego comencé a vender en una tienda física a fines de 2013. A medida que mi tienda crece, también lo hace mi compromiso de usar artículos de segunda mano y usados en mis creaciones, para salvarlos del vertedero y dar a las personas la oportunidad de apreciar la belleza de estas cosas.
Vivo en una pequeña casa en un suburbio de Los Ángeles con dos de mis tres hijos, suegra, 2 perros, 2 gatos y muchos visitantes (de dos y cuatro patas). Mi espacio de trabajo en este momento es un poco limitado: estantes en una esquina de mi habitación, una mesa plegable que guardo detrás de la puerta cuando no estoy en uso y muchos contenedores de almacenamiento debajo de la cama. Espero tener una sala de trabajo dedicada algún día, pero por ahora, me las arreglo. ¡Esto me impide exagerar en los mercados de pulgas y las ventas de propiedades, al menos!
A few years ago, my creative life took an unexpected turn. While on a road trip with my sweetheart-and-love-of-my-life, Bill, we wandered into a tobacco shop in Old Town San Diego. On a bottom shelf were several empty cigar boxes for sale. I was immediately attracted to the boxes’ beauty and also, their potential. I can do something with these, I thought, and right there, even though I didn’t know it yet, Trail’s End Collection was born. I bought the boxes, and embellished them with old buttons and coins from my collection. You should sell these, I was told. Encouraged by my children and by Bill, I started selling my creations online in August 2011. I expanded to craft fairs a few months later, and then began selling in a brick-and-mortar shop late in 2013. As my shop grows, so does my commitment to using secondhand and used items in my creations, to save them from the landfill and to give people a chance to appreciate the beauty of these things.
I live in a small house in a suburb of Los Angeles with two of my three kids, mother-in-law, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and lots of visitors (two- and four-legged). My work space right now is a bit limited: shelves in a corner of my bedroom, a folding table that I stash behind the door when not in use, and lots of under-the-bed storage bins. Hopefully I’ll have a dedicated workroom one day but for now, I make do. This keeps me from going overboard at flea markets and estate sales, at least!
