Understated numbered Yves Saint Laurent Haute Couture ensemble from the early 2000s.
Description
This two piece set is made from scarlet red very delicate raw silk. The straight-cut tunic top features a demure neckline, long sleeves (cut in one with the dress at back), a hem slit in the left front, a slit pocket on the right front side and is slightly shorter at front. It fastens in the center back with a very fine hand set hidden painted metal and nylon zipper and an hook and eye at top back neck. The tunic has silk covered shoulder pads with bra strap fastenings and should be worn loose.
The matching straight-cut skirt has a narrow waistband, closes with a zipper and an hook and eye at the left side and goes just below the knees. There is a little tag sewn inside the front waistband stating that it is indeed the front. Both tunic and skirt are lined in a matching red silk charmeuse. This ensemble is finished to Haute Couture standards and entirely done by hand. The label reads "YVES SAINT LAURENT PARIS MADE IN FRANCE" and is numbered 074670. Both items can also be worn perfectly separate.
Please note: The photographs do not justice to the sophisticated elegance of this set as it had to be pinned quite a lot.
Designer
Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in Oran, Algeria and began his career as an assistant of Christian Dior. When Dior died in 1957, he became the artistic director. In 1962 he opened his own fashion house, and in 1966, he created his ready-to-wear line Rive Gauche. By the 1980s, Yves Saint Laurent was a true icon. He was the first living designer to receive a solo exhibition in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983.
"When you put something on from Yves Saint Laurent's couture, there is an immediate sensual experience: everything, no matter what it's made of, is always lined in silk. That detail is emblematic of his total attitude toward women. He wants to spoil them, to envelop them in the pleasure of his clothes", said Catherine Deneuve.
Saint Laurent died in 2008.
