CARE INSTRUCTIONS
These handmade silk baskets are crafted with tightly crocheted yarns. Depending on the type of yarn, it's content, combination and/or basket size - some Brizel baskets are more softly rigid than others. Each basket has an embellished lid that fits over its opening... some fit more loosely and others need to be carefully 'screwed' on or off. Should your decorative basket accidentally get 'out of shape', or sit lopsided... please reshape it by gently tugging or squishing as appropriate. Be sure fingers are clean before handling. Brizel baskets are happiest when they can hold something special & sit peacefully in a undisturbed nook or shelf.
ABOUT Brizel's Silk Sari Baskets
I've been making these one of a kind silk sari baskets with embellished lids since 2005… the year i discovered silk sari yarn at an eco-friendly festival. I stood there mesmerized by their bright colors and I fully appreciated the importance of their upcycled nature. The yarns are spun from reclaimed silk sari loom warps & threads and transformed into these gorgeous art yarns. I left with two skeins and for the first time in 30 years dug up my childhood crochet needle & began creating my first silk sari work.
In order to create woven rug-like thicknesses each thick silk yarn loops are pulled tightly. It is a slow and time consuming but satisfying upon completion. Initially, I worked with only one strand of yarn. In those early days, the yarns were unforgiving as they were lumpy & unevenly spun. As the product became popular, spinning co-operatives were formed in India and Nepal to meet the market demand and as a consequence, the yarns became more even and also, more diverse in color. Space dyed vegan banana silk fiber yarns followed and my color palette exploded. I began making baskets with two and sometimes three different strands of yarn. Combining different yarns together creates a depth in color that allows my work to express itself in a more desired impressionistic style. My silk work is not only inspired by the natural world but it is firmly rooted by my love of French Impressionism. With a palette of Silk Sari threads and a selection of vintage sewing buttons, Brizel's Silk Sari Baskets keeps evolving.
