Frequently asked questions

What is upcycling?

“Upcycling” refers to the process of making something of higher value from a low-value item (in this case, waste).

Why upcycling?

Upcycling isn't just trendy, it's also a sustainable way to use raw materials. Things that would otherwise end up in the trash are reused for as long as possible. Of course, the items can always be recycled afterward.A positive side effect of this type of waste avoidance is, of course, that you don't have to worry about restocking supplies. My family enthusiastically supports me in procuring empty chip bags, etc.

Why the name “Helping Phoenix”?

I chose this name because the items worshipped here are given a new life after upcycling, like the phoenix reborn from the ashes. The addition of "Helping" is intended to explicitly indicate that I want to do good with the sale of my products. To maximize this effect, a portion of the proceeds is donated to sustainable projects.

What material are the items made of?

Each item description lists the product's contents as accurately as possible. Of course, the materials were cleaned beforehand. However, it's quite possible that some coffee packaging may still smell of coffee.

How are the prices calculated?

While there are no material costs, the time required for production is greater than one might initially assume. A lot of work and love goes into each individual piece. The prices are calculated in such a way that everyone can afford such a “designer piece” and still make enough money to make it worthwhile.

Why can't I reorder sold items?

Each piece is absolutely unique. Certain basic shapes (e.g., bags) can of course be copied, but the exact pattern with all its details cannot be reproduced.

Why are the processing times so long?

The processing time for an order is currently 5 to 7 days. This is primarily because "Helping Phoenix" cannot offer 24-hour service. I run this shop "on the side" (family, work, household, etc.), so processing sometimes takes a day or two longer than with "larger shipping giants."

Why is (only) a portion of the proceeds donated?

I donate a portion of my earnings to sustainable projects. The exact amount of the donation is stated in each item description. The other part is used for various costs (such as listing fees, additional payment transaction costs, etc.) and my contribution to the “family piggy bank.”

What happens to the donated portion?

The donation portion goes to the environmental working group of a Dortmund high school to implement sustainable projects. This working group introduces students to the topics of "environment and sustainability" and enjoys great popularity. Implementing the many planned projects involves significant costs. Donations are intended to help ensure that more than just small-scale ideas are realized.

How much has been donated so far?

Since this shop only opened in early 2018, no donations have been received yet. Regular updates will follow.
