Oil landscape painting of red barn building on a winter afternoon, Norge VA.
I would pass this farm every day on Route 60 in Williamsburg, and would wonder who owned it and what the story was. One day I got the guts to go ring the doorbell of the farmhouse on the property , to see if I could take pictures of the barn to paint it. The owner was an older man in his 80s and he proceeding to give the history of Norge Virginia, and how that farm came to be. Around the turn of the century, a number of Scandinavian-Americans began farming the land in Norge, and found that the climate was much more agreeable than the midwest. Carl Martin-Berg was a land agent with the C&O railway, helping bring a train depot to Norge and sent advertising flyers to the midwest to bring more farmers in to work the rich land. The Red Barn dates back to this era and still stands a few hundred feet from the train line.
I love painting barns and the quiet history they represent. Painting in Winter 2016.
