This design was inspired by the beautiful palette of autumn tonal yarn from Ashleigh of Sewrella. The main body of the sweater is knit in patchwork squares, using the intarsia technique to create squares of different colours. The body is knit bottom up in the round, then split at the armpits and worked flat for the front/back top portion. The sleeves are picked up and knit in one solid colour, which matches the hem and collar. The fit for this design is intended to be an oversized, boxy fit, perfect to throw on over some other layers to stay cozy! It is a size inclusive design, written in 9 sizes from 34.5-72.5 inch / 86.5-181 cm finished bust circumference. This design is intended to be worn with about 15-25% positive ease.

Note: You will also receive a copy of the Gingham Pullover when you purchase the Patchwork Pullover. The Gingham Pullover is very similar, but with a gingham patchwork layout using 3 colours and with a slightly more fitted/cropped fit. See bottom of the page for Gingham Pullover details.

Sizes offered:
1(2, 3, 4)(5, 6, 7)(8, 9)

Finished sweater full bust of:
34.5 (41, 45.5, 49.75)(54, 58.5, 64.75)(70, 72.75) inches / 86.5 (102.5, 114, 124.5)(135, 146.5, 162)(175, 181.5) cm
Note: The sizing increments vary across the sizes due to the adjusted patchwork grid for the smallest and largest sizes.

To fit actual full bust of:
27.5-30 (32.75-35.5, 36.5-39.5, 39.75-43.25)(43.25-47, 46.75-50.75, 51.75-56.25)(56-60.75, 57.75-62.75) inches / 69-75 (82-89, 91.5-99, 99.5-108)(108-117.5, 117-127, 129.5-140.5)(140-152, 144.5-157) cm

Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches / cm of the sweater, and listed below you can see the recommended actual bust range for each size. See schematics (in photos) for more measurements to help determine the right size. The sweater is designed with 15-25% proportional positive ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust, and multiply by 1.15-1.25 to find the closest size. If your upper and full bust measurements fall into different sizes, you may wish to choose size based on upper bust, as the additional increases in the body to the full bust measurement are easily adjustable. My sample is knit with about 23% positive ease (Size 3 on a 37 inch / 92.5 cm bust and 31 inch / 77.5 cm waist).

Needles recommended:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - main body
4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (or one size down from the main needle) - ribbing
Cord length to match your bust measurement as well as 9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm cord for the sleeves (or DPNs or 32-40 inch / 80-100 cm cord for the magic loop method).

Gauge:
Stockinette: Using 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (body) needles and working in stockinette, both flat and in the round. 4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 18.5 sts x 24 rows/rounds

Ribbing: Using 4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (ribbing) needles and working in 1x1 ribbing in the round. 4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 18 sts x 30 rounds

Note: If your stitch count is correct for gauge but round count is a bit off in either direction, continue using this needle size, but keep in mind you may need to adjust your length by adding/removing rounds.

Yarn required:
Any DK (3) weight yarn that you can meet gauge with. Samples are knit using Sewrella Yarns Classic DK (100% superwash merino wool, 231 yds / 211 m per 100g).

Sample #1 - Modeled on Ashleigh, uses a selection of Sewrella Autumn Tonals, with 5 patchwork colours and an additional colour for the sleeves/cuffs/collar/hem.

Sample #2 - Modeled on Claire, uses a selection from the Autumn in New York collection, with 5 patchwork colours and one of the patchwork colours used again for the sleeves/cuffs/collar/hem.

You will need 1 colour for the sleeves/hem/collar, plus 4-6 additional colours for the patches. The number of additional colours for the patchwork is dependent on the size you are knitting. The patchwork grid (number of squares wide x tall, looking at the front only) varies slightly between sizes to account for the differing bust-to-length proportions. See photos for grid layouts.
4 x 4 grid - Size 1
5 x 4 grid - Sizes 2-6
6 x 4 grid - Sizes 7-9

Yardage/Meters required:
All values are indicated as yards/meters. CC is your contrast colour for the sleeves/hem/collar. Colours 1-6 are used for the patchwork, and the yardage shown is for 8 squares of each colour.
Note: You could use one of the patchwork colours for your CC as well (seen in Sample #2).

The pattern is designed to use 4-6 colours for the patchwork, depending on size. If you desire to use more/less colours, you can use the Yardage/meters per square and Total # of squares to calculate what yardage you’ll need per colour.

Note: Yardage is an approximation and is calculated using the recommended measurements and including a 5% buffer. Allow for extra yardage if choosing to do any length modification. Yardage can vary depending on your gauge and knitting, so I always recommend ensuring you have a little bit extra.

Gingham Pullover:
This design was inspired by the original Patchwork Pullover design, but in a lovely gingham style with some modifications for a more springy sweater! It is designed with some of the beautiful colours of the Spring tonal yarn from Ashley of Sewrella. It has a bit less positive ease, a more cropped body length, and shorter ribbed sections on the hem and collar, all features which I felt gave the pullover a more spring feel! It is a size inclusive design, written in 9 sizes from 34.5-70 inch / 86.5-175 cm finished bust circumference. This design is intended to be worn with about 12-20% positive ease.

Note: The gauge, needle sizes and recommended yarn are the same as the Patchwork Pullover. I have included the information that is different below.

Sizes offered:
1(2, 3, 4)(5, 6, 7)(8, 9)

Finished sweater full bust of:
34.5 (39, 43.25, 47.5)(52, 56.25, 62.25)(67.5, 70) inches / 86.5 (97.5, 108, 119)(130, 140.5, 155.5)(169, 175) cm
Note: The sizing increments vary across the sizes due to the adjusted patchwork grid for the smallest and largest sizes.

To fit actual full bust of:
28.75-30.75 (32.5-34.75, 36-38.5, 39.5-42.5)(43.25-46.5, 46.75-50.25, 51.75-55.5)(56.25-60.25, 58.25-62.5) inches / 72-77 (81.5-87, 90-96.5, 99-106.5)(108-116.5, 117-125.5, 129.5-139)(140.5-150.5, 145.5-156.5) cm

Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches / cm of the sweater, and listed below you can see the recommended actual bust range for each size. The sweater is designed with 12-20% proportional positive ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust, and multiply by 1.12-1.2 to find the closest size. If your upper and full bust measurements fall into different sizes, you may wish to choose size based on upper bust, as the additional increases in the body to the full bust measurement are easily adjustable. The sample is knit with about 19% positive ease (Size 4 on a 40 inch / 100 cm bust).

Yarn required:
You will need 1 colour for the sleeves/hem/collar and some of the patchwork squares (colour 1), plus 2 additional colours for the remaining patches (Colours 2 and 3). The gingham patchwork grid (number of squares wide x tall, looking at the front only) varies slightly between sizes to account for the differing bust-to-length proportions. See photos for grid layouts.
