TV Stands & Media Centers

  • Learn More About Tv Stands & Media Centers

A TV stand is a piece of furniture, similar to a table, that supports your television. Whether binging that new sci-fi series or cuddling up to enjoy a rom-com with popcorn, a TV stand ensures your viewing experience is at the height you like (usually eye level when seated). TV stands come in sizes to suit small living room corners to home theater rooms and everything in between.

There are a huge variety of options to suit your decor style. If you want your new 60-inch TV to attract the bulk of the attention, consider a minimalistic, small TV stand. If you want your stand to direct conversation as much as your TV, then consider a rustic TV stand or maybe a mid-century modern TV stand.

If a TV stand supports and complements your television, a media center is designed for a full entertainment setup. Like a stand, a TV entertainment center supports your TV, but they’re more sizable, sometimes surrounding the entire television and taking up a good portion of wall space. The considerable size provides more space for things other than your television. Think of a media center as a TV stand with storage options in the form of shelves and drawers, providing ample space for devices, discs, and accessories. Both TV stands and media centers can conceal wires, cables, and gaming consoles, giving your space some extra tidiness between couch time.

Size matters when you’re shopping for a TV stand or media center. For a media center that surrounds a TV, make sure the space is big enough to accommodate the screen size you have. For a TV stand, there are two primary measurements to consider:

Height: The perfect viewing height for most people will be around eye-level while sitting on the couch. This is usually around 42 inches, but it’s always a good idea to measure for a precise viewing experience. To determine the optimal height for your stand, measure the height of your TV and divide in half (because you want your eyes in the middle of the TV). Now, subtract that from your eye height while sitting. The number you’re left with should be approximately the height of your stand.

Width: A good target is for your stand to be three inches wider than your TV on each side. This depends on your space and how you plan to use your stand, but keep in mind that if your television sits wider than the stand, there can be increased risk of bumping or tipping. For an additional three inches each side, measure the width of your TV (this is not the number advertised, which is the diagonal screen measurement) and add six inches to your measurement—this is the approximate width you want for your TV stand.

A floating entertainment center, also referred to as a wall TV stand, is a shelf stand installed into the wall. For a modern look that also conserves space and keeps your TV elevated, browse the floating entertainment centers offered by shops on Etsy.
