A lifelong passion for making things.
It's such a cliché, but I really have been making things for as long as I can remember. This has always been an essential part of who I am. I have a BFA in painting, but my artistic bent has revealed itself in many different forms over the years: drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, sewing, jewelry making, exhibit design, card making, collage, photography, even some very intricate doodling.
In short, I have always worked with my hands and I have always been a very “visual” person.
I started Red Yucca Designs in 2012. Etsy seemed like the perfect outlet for the fruits of my relatively newfound obsession with jewelry making — newfound, compared with my 40+ year history as a painter. I decided to couple my jewelry line with some small, experimental and increasingly abstract paintings in the form of greeting cards and other paper goods, along with another more recent interest: painting ceramics. And while they represent different mediums, all of these crafts reflect a passion for color, contrast, line, shape and spatial relationships. Often my work, regardless of medium, is inspired or influenced by my travels throughout the years, as well as the colors, light, topography and flora of the desert region where I live.
Red Yucca Designs is a solo enterprise. All of the finished products in my shop are handmade and/or hand-painted by me. Each and every piece is my own original design. I rarely repeat or duplicate my jewelry designs (only on special request) and all of my painted goods are truly one of a kind (OOAK). And while there may be items that resemble each other, no two pieces are ever identical.
I use quality materials in the pieces I make. This includes the best acid-free papers and professional artist grade inks and paints for my paper goods; non-toxic, food-safe paints and glazes on my ceramics; and genuine sterling silver, 14k gold-filled wire and findings, solid copper and brass, and semi-precious gemstones in my jewelry.
