I recommend going no smaller than 8.5 x 11 for the portrait size for two pets, or 11 x 14 for three, to allow plenty of room for multiple subjects in the painting.

Tip for providing reference photos for a portrait of two pets: The pets need not be photographed together to be painted in the same portrait. That said, please provide photos from roughly the same angle so that when I paint them, it will feel like they are naturally sharing the same space. Try putting your reference photos side by side and seeing if it feels natural when you look at them. I can make some adjustments for differences in lighting.
