Even the simplest of polymer clay designs look like a piece of art when it is framed in silver. The problem is commercial silver bezels are expensive and limited in shapes. Some polymer clay artists successfully make these parts themselves, but many are scared by the metal-working techniques, such as soldering, required for the typical process of creating a silver bezel.
This is a step-by-step tutorial for making polymer clay pendants with custom-made sterling silver bezels. The tutorial explains how to make the bezels in any shape you can think of using inexpensive readily available commercial supplies. No soldering or kiln is required!
I will tell you what supplies you should look for, where to buy them, how to reshape them for your needs, how to add the texture and patina, and how to attach these bezels to your polymer clay pendants.
Examples shown in this tutorial demonstrate different shapes of bezels, with smooth, textured, and oxidized finish.
For your convenience, I am including instructions both for people who want to just try these techniques without a serious investment into professional tools and materials, and for those who have these tools.
In this tutorial, I am using pictures of my own polymer clay projects to demonstrate the use of DIY bezels. Explanations for making the pendants are not included. If you are interested in learning my polymer clay techniques and finding out how to do these projects, please look for the corresponding tutorials in my shop.
Since the bezels can be used both for “regular” polymer clay pendants and for those covered with epoxy resin, the last section of this tutorial includes instructions for working with two-part Epoxy resins (such as EnviroTex Lite or ICE Resin).
There are 23 pages of detailed step-by-step explanations how to make and attach the bezels (with and without the resin) and more than 50 big full-color pictures showing every step.
