Part of the whimsical series of music-centric works by James Carter, “Violin” showcases Carter’s uncanny ability to intertwine the familiar with the unexpected. In “Violin”, the artist has married the polished and refined qualities of these classical instruments with the crystalline blues of a coastal sky. The symbiosis of light and dark adds power to this piece that is only enhanced by Carter’s intricacies--from the precision in his line work to the gossamer quality of each granule of sand that creeps up the legs of the piano. “Violin”, like much of Carter’s work, achieves strength and balance in it’s composition while maintaining soft intricacies that reveal themselves more and more each time you look at them.
The still lifes of James Carter compel us to re-examine the familiar. His carefully orchestrated subjects are fascinating voyages into the interior of a questioning consciousness. Formally trained at the Art Institute of Maryland, he was introduced to airbrush work as a vehicle to achieve the translucent surface he wished to create. Using drafting techniques while utilizing a stage set environment, he juxtaposes inanimate objects with land and sea wildlife as subjects of a surreal composition. James Carter has won numerous accolades including awards and honors since 1978. His work has been exhibited widely with one man shows in Washington D.C., New York City, Boston, and Los Angeles. His work is included in major corporate and municiple collections including Christian Dior, Yale University and the Bruce Museum in Greenwich Connecticut.
